Lacoste is a French clothing company founded in 1933 by Rene Lacoste. He is a famous tennis player who achieved fame in two areas: tennis and fashion. The company is very familiar with its green crocodile logo. The brand 'Crocodile' originated in the year 1927. The American press gave a nickname "the alligator" to Rene Lacoste after he indulged in a bet with the French Davis cup team's captain on the basis of a suitcase prepared from alligator hide. So a crocodile was drawn by his comrade Robert George which he embroidered on his blazer and wore them while being on courts. Five years later Lacoste asked knitwear producer Andre Gillier to embroider his logo on the front of a short-sleeved, jersey-knit tennis shirt which marked the beginning of the Lacoste label. It was for the first time ever that a brand name emerged on the surface of a clothing article, an initiative which has ever since developed into an extremely successful plan. Long-sleeved starched shirts, and woven fabrics were replaced by his men's sportswear and this brought a major transformation in the clothing line. The first-ever Lacoste shirt was colored white and was faintly shorter than its correspondent which had a corrugated collar, and short sleeves with ridged bands. It was prepared from a light mended fabric called "Jersey petit piquelt". High eminence, consistency, and comfort have been the brand's USP with which it originated and has constituted its personality.
In addtion to tennis shirts Lacoste produced shirts for golf and sailing. In 1951 the company began to extend its label and introduced colour shirts to the white petit pique cotton shirt. The Lacoste brand reached its height of popularity in the US during the 1970s when the tennis shirt became an essential of the hip wardrobe. The company further exteded their brand with shorts, perfume, optical and sunglasses, tennis shoes, deck shoes, walking shoes, watches, and various leather goods. In1985 a new line of Lacoste tennis shoes manufactured in france along with deck shoes in1986 and walking shoes in 1988 were launched.
